Italian connoisseurs immediately link the name
Latium (It. Lazio) with its capital Rome.
However, the region in the heart of Italy is no longer an unknown quantity in international tourism.
Geographical location:
Today’s region of Latium stretches from the northwest to the southeast somewhere around the “knee” of Italy along the Tyrrhenian Sea, which is part of the Mediterranean. When you go in a north-easterly direction the relatively narrow coastal plain to the southwest soon turns into rolling hills and these in turn slowly turn into the Apennine mountains, which culminate in the highest elevations, namely the Abruzzi mountains (Gran- Sasso-Massive with the Corno Grande, 2,912 m) just outside of Latium. The River Tiber reaches Latium from Umbria flowing through Rome and finally flowing southwest into the Tyrrhenian Sea. Covering 17, 200 m
Provinces and towns:
Latium is comprised of the provinces of Frosinone, Latina, Rieti, Rome and Viterbo.
Sights:
The following tourist attractions also worth visiting other than Rome are:
The Alban mountains, the differentsized volcanic lakes, of which Lago di Vico and Lago di Bolsena in the three-country-corner of Tuscany/Umbria/Latium are the largest, as well as the south of Latium heading towards Naples like, for example, the Monte Cassino Abbey.
Climate:
Latium has a typical Mediterranean climate. The average temperature in winter is 13-16 °C and 24 ° C in the summer. You sometimes but only rarely get snow falling on the hills. Interestingly, the climate on the Pontini coastline shows only minimum annual fluctuations in temperature and the highest degree of sunlight in the whole of Italy.
Food and drink:
You are able to taste absolutely delicious dishes such as Bucatini alla Matriciana, Spaghetti alla Carbonara, Coda alla Vaccinara or Abbacchio alla Romana in one of the many traditional trattorias. And this is all rounded off with fine wines. Further culinary delights from the province of Latium are Roman artichokes, suckling pig, black olives from Gaeta, olive oil from Sabina and chestnuts from Monte Cimini.
2 Latium has approx. 5.3 million inhabitants.
