Culture and history

The Baltic is also called the „Mare Balticum“ in Latin. Its name derives from its geographical location from the viewpoint of the Germanic peoples. The Baltic has an area of 410,000 km2 and is an up to 460 m deep semienclosed sea. The average depth of the Baltic is 52 m; the volume of water, approx. 21,600 m2. In the East, the Neva and various other waterways connect the Baltic to the Volga, the White Sea, the Black Sea, the Sea of Asov and the Caspian Sea. The salt content of the Baltic varies between 0.3 and 2.5%. The Baltic with its diverse beauty as well as the vastness of the landscape and the sea have longsince fascinated artists, crafts people and writers. With its unique charm, the Baltic is one huge scenic backdrop for art and cultural events of all kinds. Old buildings and ruins, huge cathedrals, castles and romantic parks provide excellent settings for concerts, festivals or theatre performances.

Climate

The climatic conditions in the Baltic are regarded as especially beneficial to health. Many tourists have long-since used their holiday on the coast as a health treatment. The favourable climatic factors of air, temperature, water, wind and sunlight activate the body’s defences and circulation, strengthen the immune system and have an especially healing effect on the skin and airways.
