History and culture
In the course of its existence, Vienna has developed into one of the most significant and largest cities in the whole of Central Europe. Vienna is famous for its rich variety of historical and cultural choices. The centuries of reign by the Habsburg dynasty are reflected in many of the buildings: Schönbrunn Palace with its zoo, the whole of the city centre - which was put on the list of World Heritage Sites - with its Imperial Palace, the Vienna State Opera, the museums on the Ringstraße or the University of Vienna. However, Vienna’s buildings are not only evidence of its past, but also evidence of its future. Vienna was also home to world famous musicians and artists like Mozart, Hayden, Strauß, Beethoven, Schubert, Otto Wagner and Hundertwasser – to mention just a few. There are numerous museums and exhibitions covering various themes and topics and they can all be especially recommended. In addition, the United Nations (UNO), the OPEC, the OSZE and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) all have their headquarters in Vienna.
Food and drink
Vienna is synonymous with cafés and typical Austrian wine taverns which are definitely worth a visit. The typical Viennese cuisine reflects the many influences from the surrounding regions and also historical events (the Turkish siege). Sweet dishes like the “Sachertorte” (a rich chocolate cake), the “Apfelstrudel” (apple strudel) or the “Kaiserschmarrn” (sugared, cut-up pancake with raisins), or the “Wiener Schnitzel” (breadcrumbed and fried veal escalope), the “Tafelspitz” (choice pieces of boiled beef) are really worth mentioning and represent its cuisine. The various influences can be observed and discovered at the well-known “Wiener Naschmarkt” (the famous Vienna street market which reflects the city’s mix of nationalities and food cultures).
The land and its people
The “Wiener Schmäh” (Viennese charm) is the best way to describe the Viennese people, who are considered to be friendly contemporaries despite any suggestions of the stereotype who professes doom and gloom.
