History and culture

The province of Carinthia can reflect upon 1,000 years of history which has been moulded and shaped by three culture groups: the German, the Slavic and the Roman. That’s why art and culture are a focal part of everyday life. Every year Carinthia has much to offer its lovers of culture in the form of its Carinthian summer, the numerous museums and galleries in the province’s principal city of Klagenfurt, as well as many other cultural events such as the Wörthersee Festival. Folk culture and customs are valued in Carinthia. The numerous traditions like the “Vierbergelauf” (the four mountain run), the “Gailtaler Kufenstechen”, the “Weitensfelder Kranzlreiten” or the “Villacher Fasching” (Carnival in Villach) attract numerous guests from home and abroad. The “Wiesenmärkte” (field markets) are also worth a visit.

 

Food and drink

You will always find many culinary delicacies wherever there’s extensive partying. The most famous Carinthian dishes are “Kasnudeln” and “Reindling” accompanied by a refreshing and invigorating glass of “Most” (must).

The Carinthian people are very sociable and enjoy singing and dancing. In Carinthia spor t is very popular. In the northwest, west and south of the province, alpinists can find many opportunities for climbing and hiking. You can also pursue fun sports such as rafting and canyoning. Carinthia is especially famous for its numerous lakes such as Lake Wörther, Lake Millstätter, Lake Klopeiner and many, many more.
