Hungary, the home of the “Puszta” (a part of the Great Hungarian Plain), the Balaton and Gulasch, will enchant you with its charm and surprises.
Culture and history
Hungary is very proud of its famous artists. On a musical level these are Franz Liszt and Béla Bartók and on a literary level it is Sándor Petöfi. Hungary has been an independent country since 31st October 1918 and has been a member of the European Union since 2004. Until 1918 Hungary was part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. Slovakia, a large part of Rumania, Croatia and small parts of Serbia, Poland and the Ukraine were part of the Hungarian half of the Empire.
The land and its people
Two thirds of the country is made up of the Great Hungarian Plain, which consists of multiple regions with their different folk groups and customs. It’s a mosaic of multicoloured, varied landscapes, and not just a “Puszta” as many people imagine. The western part of the lowlands, the area between the Danube River and the Theiß River (Hungary’s two largest rivers), is an attractive region which is characterised by its copses, acacia forests and huge fruit plantations and has been forged by the human-hand. The population is made up mainly of Hungarians, Germans, Slovakians, Rumanians, Serbs and other ethnic minorities. The Hungarians are proud of their long history and their cultural heritage, but particularly of the individual path that their country successfully pursued during the time of Communism.
Cuisine
The Hungarian cuisine didn’t only create dishes, it created an entire world of aromas. It introduced spices, dishes and cooking methods that became internationally famous and popular.
